"How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives." – Annie Dillard
In the midday sun
Frantically chasing checkpoints
A genial whirlwind.

My heart burns for you:
You who have no want of me
You, and your cruel heart.
An astringent glance
Warns against the wayward wiles
Of red-blooded men.
Eyes flit ‘cross the room:
Some glad, some glazed, some ablaze
What lurks in yon minds?
Swim against the tide?
But how to swim, when you are
Drowning in sorrow?
I grew up alone
And made my own ancestors
From books and your Love.
Alas! The dith’rer
His mind and tongue meander -
Lolling in a maze.
My cat licks her paw
And washes her shining face:
My lady in tux.

Pencil meets paper:
Inchoate thoughts, sketched in black,
Take flight in my mind.

Ribbons in the sky
Vermillion streaks against grey
An astral promise.
